Winnipeg Stock Exchange in Active Trader Links Directory
While the Winnipeg Stock Exchange (WSE) was Incorporated in 1903, it was not until August 1908 that it was formally organized and ready to do business. At that time, Mr. A. M. Nanton (later to be Knighted as Sir Augustus Nanton) was President. Offices were opened in the Grain Exchange Building with a membership of 24, and stocks were called for trading on February 1st, 1909. Some of the first trading was in the shares of Winnipeg Street Railway, Canadian Pacific Railway Co., Canadian Life Insurance Co., Great-West Life Assurance Co., and Northern Trust Co.Most members of the WSE represent the branch offices of large investment dealers or brokers, registered with the Manitoba Securities Commission to conduct business in Manitoba through their Winnipeg branch offices. The WSE lists many types of securities. Common and preferred stocks as well as debentures, both government guaranteed and corporate, are currently listed on the WSE. Some securities are exclusively listed on the WSE, while others are inter-listed with other exchanges. While all of our listed securities are available for trade on the WSE, brokers must endeavour to get the best execution (liquidity and price) for their clients, so it is natural that a part of their business is executed on larger Exchanges. Whether an investment dealer in Winnipeg is purely local in character or is a branch office of a larger Eastern Company, they are required to execute their clients orders on the Exchange with the broadest market.
